Penetrometer
| Penetrometers
are used to determine the resistance to penetration
(bearing capacity) of a soil. Various Penetrometers are
available, from a pocket sized device to an electronic
device with a built-in data logger. Penetrometers can be
applied for general soil research, basic advice for
foundations, checking on artificial compaction of the
soil, research into the growing circumstances of plants,
and tracing compacted

There
are many different brands.
The
purpose of the dynamic penetration ground test is to
measure the strength of layers crossed by a probe,
eliminating the lateral friction. This test is very
important in practice, since it rapidly gives a
precise idea of the strength of grounds in their
natural state.

Pocket Penetrometers are commonly used on split spoon
and thin walled tube samples to evaluate consistency and
approximate unconfined compressive strength of
saturated cohesive soils. They may
also be used for the same purpose in freshly excavated
trenches.
