TORRES STRAIT ISLANDS WATER SUPPLY
UPGRADE PROJECT
1994 -1996.
This Design & Construct (D& C) project
involved seven islands in the Torres Strait and the contract was
awarded to Thiess Contractors Pty Ltd in October 1994. The final
contract value for the project was 8.6 million dollars. The full
design was performed by Connell Wagner Pty Ltd, Cairns. In
conjunction with Brian Jackson in our Brisbane office, Connell
Wagner Pty Ltd selected our Endurazyme for Saibai Islands new Excavated storage
lagoon. Saibai
Island at it's highest point is only two metres above sea level. The
existing storage lagoons were believed to be suffering from salt
water intrusion during high tides. Endurazyme was selected for
the new lagoon because of its proven ability to have a very
pronounced effect on the permeability of clay based
soils. Thiess Contractors Pty Ltd under the Project Manager, Mike
Zambelli and on site Engineer Justin Groves controlled earthworks
and construction. The on site Supervisor, Horst Zinda located and
established a suitable borrow pit to source the clay liner for the
excavated storage. |

The same Endurazyme
treatment will ensure similar results for the effective construction of
retention lagoons, waste ponds ,dams, dikes and water containment
sites.

The above dam
under construction on Saibai Island, clay was brought from a
borrow pit 2 kilometres
away. |
The
purpose of the above dam was to keep the salt water out and the fresh
drinking water in.
Endurazyme is
highly suited to dam construction of all kinds, from toxic waste
containment to fresh water dams and the final capping of waste containment
areas. The liners are constructed from 150mm to a two lift
construction giving final treated soils to 300 mm. Increased
impermeability is the aim in all instances.
